In a further expansion of its sales and service capabilities in the northeast, Olympus America Inc. will begin selling and servicing scientific equipment directly in the region surrounding its headquarters in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley beginning October 1. Professionals in science and industry use Olympus microscopes and imaging equipment for research, clinical applications, measuring and inspecting products and other purposes.
The eastern Pennsylvania region extends from Philadelphia north to the New York State border and west to Lancaster. Other areas of Pennsylvania will be serviced by B&B Microscopes, Ltd., of Pittsburgh. B&B Microscopes and its sister company Hunt Optics and Imaging will also continue to provide excellent sales and service to Olympus customers in Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama and Georgia.

Olympus Corporation of the Americas relocated to Center Valley from Melville, N.Y. in June 2006. Within a 50-mile radius of the headquarters facility there are dozens of colleges and universities, along with a high concentration of pharmaceutical companies, all of which are extensive users of microscopes. In addition to visiting with customers at their own sites, staff members will now be able to access the headquarters facility’s state-of-the art demonstration and conference center for meetings, training and demonstrations with interested users.
Olympus relies upon a combination of direct and dealer sales to best serve its customers throughout the United States, making decisions in each region depending upon the needs of customers in that area. In addition to making a variety of recent changes in its distribution network, Olympus continues to strengthen its nationwide support and service capabilities with new personnel, features and enhanced availability and response times. The company also has introduced several key products recently, including the flagship BX3® microscope series and the LEXT OLS4000® laser confocal microscope for industrial users.
Prior Scientific has introduced the ZDeck Quick Adjust Platform System for Olympus BX51WI and BX61WI microscopes. The motorized stage allows the user to image multiple areas of interest with speed and precision. It lowers quickly and easily via pneumatic pistons, providing easy access for loading and unloading of samples.
No tools are required for height adjustment, simplifying the transition of changing between a thin sample and whole animal imaging heights. Condenser and pillar spacers are included with the system to allow for Koehler illumination at a wide range of focus heights. The system incorporates a custom Prior Scientific ProScan series high precision motorized stage which provides submicron repeatability and smooth movement.
The high precision motorized stage is controlled by the new ProScan III controller and PS3J100 joystick which provide ultra-fine control via dual digipots. Oversized plates are provided on both sides of the sample area for mounting micromanipulators. The ProScan series stage can also be equipped with encoders for applications that require the ultimate in high precision, and it is compatible with 6mm or 1/4-20 vibration isolation tables.
Olympus America Inc. has signed a nonexclusive worldwide licensing agreement with BioImagene, Inc. of Sunnyvale, California, allowing BioImagene to access an extensive portfolio of Olympus patents in the field of digital pathology and virtual microscopy. This is the most recent of several licenses that Olympus has granted for the technologies, which are considered critical for developing future digital imaging and data handling systems for pathology.
Digital pathology technology has the potential to change the way doctors review and manage millions of biopsy slides and other pathology specimens now handled using glass slides and traditional optical microscopes. The patents included in the licensing deal cover methods and equipment for creating, storing and delivering virtual microscopy slides. The technology enables pathologists to view and share high-resolution virtual microscopy images over the Internet.
The companies are not making specific terms and conditions of the agreement public.
The White LED Ring Light from Aven, Inc. combines seven brightness choices with four lighting modes for customized adaptation to any specimen or objective. Sixty long-lasting LEDs provide soft, no-shadow illumination for life science labs, industrial inspection and materials analysis. The flicker-free white lights retain color integrity over time and operate at low temperature to minimize user discomfort, even for long spans.
"Full" mode operation uses all of the evenly distributed LEDs (35,000 lux), or users can illuminate one, two or three quadrants. Seven brightness settings add further precision. Applications include biotechnology research, health care lab work, forensics, gemology and failure or defect analysis of small parts. Installing the ring light below a microscope lens allows a working distance of 50 to 160 mm. The plug-in accessory has a 40 mm inner diameter and 70 mm outer diameter.
